What are the common causes of water damage?
Burst or leaking pipes, failed supply lines on toilets, washing machines, and ice makers, water heater leaks, roof leaks, clogged drains, sewer backups, and storm water coming in through windows and doors.
How quickly should I respond to water damage?
As soon as possible. Water spreads into drywall, insulation, and flooring within hours, and mold can start to grow in wet materials in 24 to 48 hours. Call right away, even at night.
What are the potential health risks of water damage?
It depends on where the water came from. Clean water from a supply line is low risk at first, but it becomes riskier the longer it sits. Water from a sewer, toilet, or flood can carry bacteria and other contaminants. Mold growth can also affect people with allergies or asthma. Avoid contact with water from dirty sources and call a professional.
What are the different categories of water damage?
Category 1 is clean water from a source such as a broken supply line. Category 2 is water with significant contamination, such as dishwasher or washing machine discharge. Category 3 is grossly contaminated water, such as sewage or flood water.
The higher the category, the more protective equipment is needed and the more porous materials, like carpet and drywall, usually have to be removed.
What should I do if I suspect water damage or flooding?
Stay safe, shut off the water source if you can, document the damage with photos, and call us. See our first-hour guide for the full steps.
What is the difference between mitigation, remediation, and restoration?
Mitigation stops further damage by containing the source and removing water. Remediation removes and cleans damaged or contaminated materials. Restoration repairs and rebuilds the property to its condition before the loss.
Can I handle water cleanup on my own, or should I hire a professional?
A small spill of clean water that you catch right away can be handled yourself. If the water has been there for more than a day, has soaked into walls or floors, came from a dirty source, or is near electrical, hire a professional. Moisture left behind leads to mold and rot.
What certifications and qualifications do you have?
Our technicians hold IICRC certifications in Water Damage Restoration (WRT) and Fire and Smoke Restoration (FSRT). Anaya Builder Group is a licensed California general contractor, CSLB #1034169.
What can I do to prevent mold growth after water damage?
Dry the structure quickly, remove materials that cannot be dried, and keep humidity low. Do not paint or install new flooring until moisture readings show the structure is dry.
